It’s not all about Cannock Chase:
When outsiders come to Staffordshire to organise Gravel Rides they often take the easy option and head to Cannock Chase. It’s easy to understand why as the Chase has lots of very pleasant and rideable gravel and multiple options for places to park and eat before and after your ride.
However
Staffordshire also has plenty of other nooks and corners to investigate if you’ve got a bit of local knowledge and a broader definition of what you might be getting up to on a gravel bike. And that’s the brief we set ourselves when we designed this route that starts and finishes in Sandon.
The route was originally created as the off road option for an event we orgnised for PAU in September 2024 when Sir Bradley Wiggins joined us for a day of cycling here in Staffordshire. It criss-crosses a more traditional 50 miler that we also ran on the same day (and which we’ll upload later!)
Unfortunately you can’t park at Sandon Hall on any normal day of the week, so we’ve tweaked the route to start and finish in the middle of the village. There’s a little bit of road side parking there and the village shop does an awesome bacon sandwich if that’s your thing. Also, for post ride refreshment, you could do a lot worse than stop in at the Dog & Doublet pub which does cracking meals and even rooms for the night if it’s all been a bit much.
The Route
A Scenic Adventure
Gravel cycling has surged in popularity, offering enthusiasts a chance to explore off-the-beaten-path landscapes while enjoying the thrill of cycling. We think this is a standout route which you can also find on Ride with GPS, which promises an exciting adventure through diverse terrain and offering a great snapshot of this part of Staffordshire
Route Overview
This particular gravel cycling route spans just over 50miles, taking riders through a mix of gravel paths, dirt roads, green lanes, bridle ways, and paved sections. Roughtly 25% of the route can be classified as off road. It’s ideal for cyclists looking to experience nature and enjoy the serenity of less-traveled roads. The route’s varied elevation provides a good challenge, making it suitable for intermediate to advanced riders.
Key Highlights Along the Route
1. The Start
The route kicks off from the village of Sandon. We’ve marked our start point at the gates to the Sandon Hall estate. The village also offers a cute little village store that does a great hot sandwich to order as well as plenty of other essentials for the ride ahead.
2. Scenic Countryside Views
From early in the ride your climbing is rewarded with some great views west into Shropshire (on a clear day!) And that continues to be a feature of the route throughout. As you approach the village of Swynnerton there’s even a viewing point with a visual guide of the hills to be viewed on the horizon.
3. Historic Landmarks
Along the route, you’ll encounter several historic landmarks. After starting at the entrance to the Sandon Hall estate, ancestral home of the Earls of Harrowby since 1776, the route then passes the Swynnerton Estate, home to Francis Fitzherbert who is the 15th Lord Stafford. In addition there are a number of other quirks to be spotted on the route like the Beech Caves and Isaac Walton’s Cottage. These sites tell the stories of Staffordshire’s heritage, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past. Whether it’s an old railway bridge or a historic home, these landmarks enrich the cycling experience.
4. Charming villages
The route takes you through quaint small towns, where riders can take a break and enjoy local cafes or shops. These towns often have a welcoming vibe, perfect for refueling with a snack or a drink. Engaging with the local community can add a memorable touch to your ride.
6. Challenging Sections
For those seeking adventure, the route includes several challenging gravel sections. These segments test your handling skills and endurance, ensuring an exhilarating ride. Make sure to ride at your own pace and enjoy the thrill of navigating varied terrains. In contrast to some of the more managed paths of areas like Cannock Chase, the going on this ride can vary significantly according to the weather and the seasons. The route includes sections through forestry, along canal towpaths and through green lanes and bridleways making it a true adventure ride!

7. Finish Point: Back to Sandon
The route concludes in the middle of Sandon and if you’ve got time a drink and maybe a snack at the Dog & Doublet pub is an excellent way to round off a day in the saddle.
Final Thoughts
This gravel cycling route not only offers an invigorating ride but also a chance to explore the natural beauty and charm of the surrounding areas.
