Thinking about your first sportive?

Here are some tips about how to prepare and what to expect on the day.

Embarking on your first sportive is an exciting milestone in your cycling journey. The Spring Forward 2025 Staffordshire Sportive, scheduled for May 4th, offers the perfect opportunity to experience the thrill of organised cycling events. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare and make the most of your inaugural sportive adventure.

Understanding the Event

The Spring Forward 2025 is a 100km (approximately 62 miles) ride through the picturesque landscapes of Staffordshire. Organised by RideStaffs, this event is designed to cater to both novice and seasoned cyclists, providing a supportive and enjoyable environment for all participants.

Choosing the Right Distance

For your first sportive, it’s crucial to select a distance that aligns with your current fitness and experience levels. The 100km route of the Spring Forward 2025 is manageable for most cyclists with some training. If you’re accustomed to shorter rides, consider gradually increasing your mileage in the weeks leading up to the event to build endurance. When you enter the ride, have a think about whether you can be fit to ride a fairly hilly 100km route in time for 4th May 2025!

Training Tips

  • Consistency is Key: Aim for regular weekly rides, gradually increasing your distance and incorporating varied terrains to simulate the event’s course.
  • Group Rides: Joining local cycling groups can provide motivation and simulate the group dynamics of a sportive.
  • Rest and Recovery: Ensure you include rest days in your training schedule to allow your body to recover and prevent burnout.

Essential Kit Checklist

  • Bike Check: Ensure your bike is in good working condition. A pre-event service can prevent mechanical issues on the day. We’d recommend dropping yours in at PAU where you can get a free bike check and advice on anything that might need updating or fixing.
  • Clothing: Opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate cycling attire. Given the unpredictable British weather, layering is advisable.
  • Accessories: A helmet is mandatory. Consider gloves, sunglasses, and a lightweight waterproof jacket.
  • Tools and Spares: Carry a puncture repair kit, spare inner tubes, a multi-tool, and a pump.

Nutrition and Hydration

  • Pre-Ride Meal: Consume a carbohydrate-rich meal a few hours before the start to fuel your ride.
  • During the Ride: Bring energy bars, gels, or snacks to maintain energy levels. Aim to drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Post-Ride: Replenish with a mix of protein and carbohydrates to aid recovery.

What to Expect on the Day

  • Registration: Arrive early to allow time for registration and any last-minute preparations. There’s parking at our ride HQ on the day.
  • Route Signage: The course will be well-marked, but it’s advisable to carry a route map or have it loaded on a GPS device.
  • Support: There will be support vehicles and feed stations along the route offering refreshments and assistance if needed.
  • Atmosphere: Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cyclists and the shared experience of conquering the course together.
